Population
According to the CIA, the population in the Netherlands is 16,805,037 as of July, 2013.  The United States' population as of July 2013 is 307,006,550.  That indicates we, in the United States, have just under 300 million more people than the Netherlands!

Most of these people live in the rural areas throughout the country.

The largest city in the Netherlands is Amsterdam (North Holland), with a population of 801,542 people.  The second largest city is Rotterdam (South Holland), with a population of 616,473.  The smallest city in the Netherlands is Zwolle, located in Overijssel, with a population of 122,518.

Agriculture
France, the Netherlands is the world's second largest exporter of agricultural products, following the United States.  The Netherlands is one of the world's three leading producers of vegetables and fruit.  It supplies a quarter of the vegetables that are exported from Europe.  On contrary, it poses challenges to the environment.  Recently, farms became larger in scale and production became more intensive.  As a result, fertilizers and manure made more impact on the countryside.  Farming had to become more sustainable, the Dutch government said.  Today, the Dutch agricultural sector is strongly focused on sustainability: it is a source of healthy, safe food that is produced with respect for the landscape and the environment.

The "Dutch cuisine" is shaped by fishing and farming.  The meals are simple with many vegetables and little meat; breakfast and lunch are typically bread with toppings while dinner is meat and potatoes, supplemented with seasonal vegetables.  The Dutch diet was relatively high in carbohydrates and fat, reflecting the dietary need of the laborers whose culture molded the country, and contains many dairy products.

Industry and Tourism
The Netherlands is a high visited country.  The tourism industry of the Netherlands is focused on North Holland, where the country's largest airport Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is located.  Given the relatively small size of the Netherlands, it is easily possible to travel to locations in South Holland within an hour.

Cultural Activities
Holland offers many, many events.  Festivals, markets, parades, expositions and events are organized throughout the country in every season.  Spring mainly offers flower parades and cheese markets.  In summer, there's a wealth of dance, music and theater festivals; autumn is the time for art and culture, and Sinterklaas and the Christmas markets bring warmth to cold winter months.  The largest national event is celebrated every year on 30 April: Queen's Day.
